Our clients purchased their brownstone in the late 90’s. Lovers of history and the arts, the house appealed to them because of its expansive width and original details, including three working fireplaces, applied moldings, mahogany doors, original lighting fixtures, etc. all which were restored throughout the years, and which remained intact at the time of purchase.

As their children grew and left home, the couple decided it was time for a refresh. We were brought on early in the process to collaborate with the architect and general contractor on a comprehensive four-story renovation.

Frequent entertainers, they wanted the main living, dining room and kitchen on the same level with easy access to the garden. To address limited natural light on the garden floor, a double vaulted glass exterior was introduced which provided a striking architectural detail and allowed daylight to flood the spaces. A floating rear staircase connects the extension with the original parlor level.

Influenced by the wife’s formative years in Europe, the design reflects a fresh, restrained palette and natural wood finishes. Avid art collectors and world travelers, their curated collection of original art, European artifacts and vintage pottery brings a distinctive personal narrative to the home.

This was our second time working together so the trust was already well established. The goal was to create a home that felt livable, warm, and family friendly, yet sophisticated and timeless. While the new-build spec home offered a strong layout, handsome oak flooring, generous ceiling heights and abundant natural light, it lacked the warm, organic touches we are known for.

We began by revisiting the floor and lighting plans, along with key architectural details. We re-worked the living room mantle and updated the LR and office millwork with richer paint tones and new cabinetry hardware. Lighting fixtures were replaced throughout, and custom ceiling and wall details were layered in to further elevate the spaces. Once the architectural elements were finalized, we furnished the home with a thoughtful mix of vintage and custom, using a few favorites from our initial project together.
By optimizing the spec build details, the spaces were more balanced and cohesive, allowing the custom millwork and beautiful furnishings to shine.
